When a stray cat called Possum found himself in a tight spot, a dedicated animal rescuer named Tamari stepped in to offer him a second chance at life.
Tamari was working on a trap-neuter-return initiative at a trailer park in New Jersey when she first heard about this elusive feline.
Residents warned Tamari that the cat was blind and nearly impossible to capture, since he only appeared sporadically. But Tamari felt a connection and decided to try her luck.

She set humane traps, but they proved ineffective in the beginning. Undeterred, she learned from neighbors that Possum might have been abandoned by a previous owner. With that information, she suspected he might be friendly.
Every day for three months, Tamari kept a vigilant eye out for Possum. Just as she was about to conclude her rescue efforts in the area, Possum finally showed up.

Despite his cross-eyed appearance, he wasn’t blind as initially thought, and Tamari managed to capture him safely under a drop trap.

When initially captured, Possum was wary, bearing the scars of street life with an old leg wound. His behavior was feral, attacking and hissing at his rescuer.
But Tamari remained patient. Trust took time to build, and with steady care, she introduced him to gentle touches, starting with a stick to make the process less intimidating.

Possum gradually began to relax. The breakthrough moment for Tamari came when he purred for the first time during their interaction. Despite his rough exterior, it became clear that underneath he was just a soft-hearted creature.

A month into his rescue journey with City Kitties DC, a volunteer-based animal rescue, Possum started to reveal a tender side. Settling into his foster home, he soon started craving affection, often nuzzling his foster mom, Jen, for cuddles.

Possum received medical care, a much-needed bath, and an ear cleaning. During this process, another foster cat named Danica befriended him, showing motherly affection by cleaning him.
The two quickly bonded, with Possum becoming more lively and curious.

Jen’s joy was evident when she witnessed Possum’s first playful moment with a toy. His transformation was remarkable. No longer shy, he energetically greeted his foster parents and playfully explored his surroundings.

Despite his impaired vision, Possum quickly became a favored companion who loves to snuggle. His charming and slightly goofy demeanor has made him a beloved lap cat.
“Possum’s resilience and affectionate nature are truly uplifting,” Jen shared. “He simply desires to enjoy the comforts of an indoor life surrounded by love and care.”
